Zaphiro Technologies has developed SynchroGuard, an innovative monitoring and automation solution for the smart management of electrical distribution grids, which allows utilities to safely integrate renewable energies as well as to improve grid reliability by quickly reacting to electrical faults. SynchroGuard is a real-time grid monitoring and automation solution based on micro-PMUs (Phase Measurement Units), which are very accurate, frequent (up to 50 meas/sec) and time-synchronized measurements of voltage and current signals and patented algorithms. The hardware consists of distributed sensing devices and a central grid controller that collects and processes PMU measurements in real-time. Four software modules are available for real time monitoring and state estimation, for fault location (also of faults that could not be located before like 1phase and self-extinguishing faults), for control of DER’s and switches) and for analytics. SynchroGuard provides to the grid operator a real-time view of the grid status via state estimation, enables safe integration of renewable energies and electric vehicles via real-time optimal control algorithms, and improves grid reliability thanks to a very accurate and patented method for locating electrical faults. In effect, SynchroGuard detects and locates also faults (like self-extinguishing and 1phase faults) that are not located by other technologies and allow predictive maintenance. Thanks to these features, SynchroGuard improves grid efficiency, security, and reliability as well as decreases utility’s OpEx and CapEx. Zaphiro has paying customers in Switzerland and Hongkong and is in advanced discussion with grid operators in Italy, Qatar and Switzerland.
